Mushroom corals (Discosoma, Rhodactis, and Ricordea species) are hardy and low-maintenance corals, making them a great choice for beginners in reef aquariums. Here are some essential tips and tricks to keep them thriving:
1. Lighting Requirements
Mushroom corals prefer moderate to low lighting. Too much light can cause them to shrink or bleach.
If they appear to be stretching, they may need more light; if they shrink or lose color, they may need less light.
2. Water Flow
They thrive in low to moderate water flow. Too much flow can cause them to detach from rocks and float around the tank.
3. Placement in the Tank
Place them in shaded or lower areas of the tank if you have strong lighting.
Avoid placing them directly in high-flow areas.
4. Water Parameters
Keep water stable with these ideal parameters:
Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C)
pH: 8.1-8.4
Salinity: 1.024-1.026
Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
Calcium: 350-450 ppm
Nitrates & Phosphates: Low but not zero (some nutrients are beneficial).
5. Feeding & Nutrition
Mushroom corals are photosynthetic but benefit from occasional feeding.
Offer small meaty foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or coral foods like Reef Roids.
Target feed once a week for faster growth and better coloration.
6. Growth and Propagation
They naturally reproduce by budding or splitting.
You can frag them manually by cutting a healthy mushroom with a razor blade and securing the fragments to rock.
7. Dealing with Pests & Issues
Aiptasia and Vermetid Snails can irritate mushroom corals. Keep the tank pest-free.
If a mushroom detaches, place it in a low-flow area or a frag cup with rubble to encourage reattachment.
If mushrooms start to melt, check for poor water quality or excessive lighting.
8. Compatibility with Other Corals
Mushroom corals are mostly peaceful but can release chemicals that affect sensitive corals.
Avoid placing them near aggressive corals like torch corals, frogspawn, or certain SPS corals.
